Many Advantages from Coir Geotextiles Uses

coir geotextiles uses

Coir Geotextiles uses – Coconut geotextile is a natural and absorbent textile material used to improve soil characteristics. It can separate, filter, strengthen, protect and drain when combined with soil. Coconut geotextile is ideal for many infrastructure works such as roads, ports, landfills, drainage facilities, and other civil facilities.

Coconut geotextile is very useful for soil reinforcement at a relatively low cost compared to other soil reinforcement methods. In addition, in forms with good stability, the soil does not sag easily. Coir Geotextile is a natural solution to prevent large-scale soil erosion/degradation.

Coconut geotextile is made from coconut, which is processed by crushing it with a coconut crusher. The coconut fiber is cut into small pieces and then sifted with a coconut fiber screening machine to obtain individual fibers. This fiber is then spun on a spinning machine to a diameter size that can be adjusted as needed.

Categories of Coconut Coir Geotextile Uses

Coconut geotextile is made from coconut, which has gone through several processes. Coconut geotextile is easy to decompose and environmentally friendly because it comes from natural resources. They are divided into 2 categories depending on how they are prepared:

  • Woven coir fiber geotextile
  • Non-Woven Coir Geotextile

1. Coconut fiber geotextile

This form is the simplest. It is made traditionally handcrafted using a biaxial weaving technique. This form is mainly used for erosion control. Changes are made depending on the precipitation intensity, soil type, and surface slope. Each variety can be identified by weight per m2 and yarn type.

2. Non-woven coconut geotextile

The coconut type of geotextile is often referred to as coconut filter cloth. Manufactured from the same materials as non-woven coir geotextile in sheet form rather than weaving. Coconut fibers are pressed and heated with a particular adhesive.

Generally, both types of coir geotextile perform the same function. But its use depends on the type of soil and the structure’s purpose.

Uses and Functions of Coconut Geotextile

The mode of operation of coconut geotextile in any application is determined by three discrete functions:

1. Coir Geotextiles Uses to Filters

Coir geotextile has high absorbance, so it can drain water through it. Water flow will carry away soil particles, so the coco geotextile works like a sieve or filter where water can still flow. Still, soil particles do not penetrate the coco geotextile.

2. Separator

Coconut geotextile is known to prevent the soft ground from mixing with the ground surface, such as in the case of road construction on a soft basis. Often the soft subgrade moves up. The role of the coir geotextile is to prevent soft soil from rising onto the pavement.

Firstly, the advantage of coconut geotextile is that it has good elasticity. It can withstand the resulting frictional force, so it is suitable as a separator between soft ground and pavement above it.

3. Sealing

A layer of non-woven coconut geotextile is impregnated between the existing and new asphalt layers. The geotextile absorbs the asphalt into a waterproofing membrane, minimizing the vertical flow of water into the pavement structure.

The scope of coconut coir geotextiles in mechanical engineering is pervasive. The application of coconut geotextile is given in the “Nature of work” section.
